The Western Balkans is testing relevance of the EU enlargement

Publisher: Alija Kozljak

Volume: 8 pages, pdf

Description:

Observing the EU polices and processes, it can be noticed that the enlargement is one of the key concerns that affects the further integration course, as well as the overall stability and security of the region. Therefore, it has been considered as applicable to test the relevance of the existing EU enlargement policy in regard to the Western Balkans countries intent to join the Union. Consequently, the conceptual interpretation of the enlargement, from the theoretic as well as institutional perspective, has been performed. That was followed by an elaboration of the EU enlargement process, examining if there is a clear EU prospect for the Western Balkans countries, highlighting developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Republic of Serbia. By researching the integration of the region, it was straightforward to observe that, despite the Thessaloniki Summit optimism when the Western Balkans countries were promised to join the union in near future, the process has been stacked. The actual developments are also examined, considering new momentum as an additional opportunity for the integration of the region to the EU.
