Description:

With the crisis in Ukraine there is much discussion about Europe’s dependence on Russian gas and how this could be reduced. The options on the table include the reduction of energy demand through energy efficiency, increased investment in renewable energies and the supporting grid infrastructure, imports of US gas, more LNG terminals and more pipelines bringing gas from regions other than Russia. Unfortunately, discussions on how to reduce dependence by reducing demand are taking a back seat. We take a look here at the proposed new gas pipelines and - based on the EU’s own figures - question the assumption that there is a real need for them, at the same time emphasizing that they will have severe environmental, social and human rights impacts if constructed.
