The Muslim Label: How French North Africans Have Become “Muslims” and not “Citizens”

By looking carefully at past and present policy surrounding the organization and creation of an Islam Français, this paper aims to link the struggle for integration faced by France’s Maghrebi population to the French state’s continual categorization and labelling of French North Africans as “Muslims” and not as “true” French citizens.
