Since the introduction of visa liberalization in December 2009 , the citizens of the Republic Macedonia have been able to travel visa-free to all EU Member States, apart from the United Kingdom and Ireland, using only their biometric passports. The country obtained visa liberalization by fulfilling all the EU's benchmarks of the roadmaps of visa liberalization in 2009. These benchmarks were related to strengthening the fields of the rule of law, combating corruption and transnational organized crime, citizens' rights including the protection of minorities, illegal migration and strengthening the administrative capacities of border management.
